What is an Oncologist?

An oncologist is a doctor who finds and treats cancer. Some oncologists focus on specific treatments. For example, a radiation oncologist uses radiation to treat cancer.

Nurses: Our registered nurses get extra training to care for people with cancer. Many are Oncology Certified Nurses, which means they have a lot of experience and passed a national exam.

Radiation Therapists: These specialists plan and give radiation treatments. They use advanced technology and tailor each treatment to the patient.

Radiation Physics Team: Our physicists and dosimetrists work closely with doctors to make sure radiation treatments are safe, accurate, and effective.

Pharmacists: Our pharmacists prepare and manage cancer medications. They follow national guidelines and work with doctors to make sure treatments are safe. They also help patients understand their medicines.

Dietician: Eating well is important during cancer treatment. Our dietitian helps patients plan healthy meals and answers nutrition questions before, during, and after treatment.

Genetic Counselor: provides education and risk assessment for people who, based on personal and family history, are at high risk for developing cancer.

Counselor: Our counselor teaches relaxation and stress-reducing techniques like meditation. They also offer support for patients and families dealing with the emotional effects of cancer.

Social Worker: Our social worker helps patients find resources such as financial aid, housing, disability services, and support programs.

Breast Care Navigators: These team members guide patients with breast cancer through their care. They help coordinate treatment and connect patients with specialists.

Patient Navigator (American Cancer Society): This navigator helps patients and families find helpful information, services, and support.

Financial Counselor: Helps patients and families who do not have health insurance understand their options and get assistance.

Chaplains: Chaplains offer spiritual support and guidance based on each person’s beliefs.

Support Staff: Many team members work behind the scenes, including clerks, technicians, lab staff, researchers, and office staff. They help everything run smoothly so patients receive the best care possible.
