Common Weight-Loss Surgery Options

The two most common surgical procedures for weight loss are:

  • Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
  • Sleeve Gastrectomy (Gastric Sleeve)

Both procedures are typically performed using minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques through several small incisions in the abdomen.

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

Gastric bypass surgery helps patients lose weight by reducing the amount of food they can eat and limiting how many calories their body absorbs.

During the procedure:

  • A small stomach pouch, about the size of a thumb, is created.
  • This smaller stomach fills up more quickly, helping patients feel full sooner.
  • A section of the small intestine is rerouted and connected to the new stomach pouch.
  • Food bypasses part of the digestive system, reducing calorie and nutrient absorption.

This combination of eating less and absorbing fewer calories can lead to significant, long-term weight loss.

Sleeve Gastrectomy (Gastric Sleeve)

Sleeve gastrectomy is another common weight-loss procedure that helps patients lose weight by reducing the size of the stomach.

During the procedure:

  • About 75% to 80% of the stomach is removed.
  • The remaining stomach is shaped into a narrow tube, or "sleeve."
  • The smaller stomach holds less food, helping patients feel full with smaller meals.
  • Hormonal changes caused by the surgery can help reduce hunger and support weight loss.

In addition to promoting weight loss, gastric sleeve surgery may help improve conditions related to obesity, such as:

  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Sleep apnea

Gastric sleeve surgery is generally considered after diet, exercise, and other weight-loss methods have not produced the desired results.
