Center for Global Health & Healing

refugee resettlement program, center for victims of torture

The Saint Alphonsus Medical Group Center for Global Health & Healing (CGHH) was created to support individuals and families who have recently moved to the community through the U.S. Refugee Resettlement Program.

CGHH includes several services, such as:

  • CARE Maternal/Child Health Clinic
  • International Family Medicine Clinic
  • Program for Survivors of Torture
  • Community Health Advisor Program
  • Travel Medicine
  • Civil Surgeon Services

The center provides complete, whole-person care. Staff are trained to understand trauma, respect different cultures, and communicate in patients’ preferred languages. CGHH focuses on treating people with respect and helping them feel safe, giving them choices, and building trust during their care.

Saint Alphonsus CARE Clinic offers group prenatal care for families who have recently come to the United States through the refugee resettlement program. Patients who choose this type of care meet every other week in a group with a nurse and a social worker. They also have one-on-one visits with a midwife.

The clinic takes a whole-person approach to care. It focuses on meeting the physical, emotional, and social needs of patients and their families. Care is provided in a way that understands past trauma, respects different cultures, and uses the patient’s preferred language.

The care team includes midwives, family doctors, nurses, social workers, interpreters, health advisors, and patient service staff who all work together to support patients.

The Center for Global Health & Healing offers support through the Program for Survivors of Torture (PSOT). This program helps people and their families who have experienced torture or serious trauma.

PSOT provides care that looks at the whole person, including their physical health, mental health, emotional well-being, social needs, and spiritual needs. The goal is to help individuals heal and recover in all areas of their lives.

PSOT also offers training for healthcare workers, organizations, and community members. This training helps others better understand the needs of people affected by torture and improves the community’s ability to support them.

Health Advisors help by:

  • Making sure patients understand their treatment plans, medicines, and care instructions
  • Helping patients fill out forms, schedule appointments, and follow up with care
  • Reducing challenges like language differences and transportation issues
  • Helping healthcare providers understand a patient’s culture, religion, or past trauma that may affect their health
  • Coordinating care between different doctors and services
  • Helping families use their own strengths and community resources to solve problems
  • Teaching patients how to use healthcare services so they can feel more confident and involved in their care
  • Offering support and companionship in the patient’s own language and cultural setting

CARE Clinic Health Advisors

Health Advisors at the CARE Maternal/Child Health Clinic support patients during pregnancy, labor, delivery, and after the baby is born. This program started with a special grant and continues to help women, children, and families. There are currently 10 Health Advisors who speak 13 different languages.
