A Less Invasive Treatment for a Leaky Heart Valve

Saint Alphonsus is the only health system in Idaho that offers a minimally invasive treatment for people with tricuspid regurgitation, also called a leaky tricuspid valve. .

The tricuspid valve is located on the right side of the heart between the heart's upper and lower chambers. Its job is to keep blood moving in the correct direction. When the valve does not close properly, blood can leak backward. This condition, known as tricuspid regurgitation, can make the heart work harder and may cause symptoms such as shortness of breath, tiredness, and reduced energy.

The device is specially designed to help repair the tricuspid valve without the need for traditional open-heart surgery in many patients. Because it is a minimally invasive procedure, it may offer a safer and less disruptive treatment option for eligible patients.

Benefits of the Procedure

Patients who qualify for the procedure may experience:

  • Reduced valve leakage
  • Increased safety compared to more invasive procedures
  • Shorter procedure times
  • Faster recovery
  • Improved quality of life after treatment

Understanding Tricuspid Regurgitation

Heart valves contain small flaps called leaflets that open and close to keep blood flowing in the right direction. When one or more of these leaflets do not close completely, blood can flow backward through the valve. This is called regurgitation. Over time, the extra strain on the heart can lead to symptoms and affect overall heart function.
