Philosophy of Care

My favorite part of practicing sleep medicine is helping patients understand why sleep disorders develop and how the available treatments work. When the reasons behind a problem are understood, the reasons for treatment make more sense. When the reasons for treatment make sense, patients are more engaged and more successful in reaching their sleep health goals.

My brother, the patient, is learning disabled. As we walk to the car, I asked him if he had any questions or concerns after hearing what Dr. Dunn had to say. He thought about it and decided he thoroughly understood and feels positive about the direction he’s decided to take.

Dr. Dunham is a very generous listener and clearly makes a patient’s health concerns a priority. He cared enough to explain how another and different kind of sleep study might discover something else that could be of benefit to my health concerns.His ability to recap and verbally summarize back to me (without looking at a screen) all of my sleep medicine medical records (going back to 1999) made me feel cared about and in the hands of a physician who will always do his best for me and my health care.

I give Dr. Dunham and staff a strong endorsement following my recent initial appointment with Dr. Dunham and to The Saint Alphonsus /Trinity Health System. My recent visit with Dr. Dunham was a welcome surprise . We had ample time to ask important questions of one another . I had time to fill Dr. Dunham in about my complex history with this rare disease I H , and the reason for my visit to him . There was even enough time for me to respectfully disagree . Dr. Dunham was gracious and open to listening to my rare disease story and my theories regarding it . This felt like great bedside manner ( although that’s the old term) Thank You

Dr. Dunham spent an ample amount of time explaining all of the procedures and why he felt I should take an extra test to help with a diagnosis of my problem. I was very impressed with him, his patience and willingness to spend all the time needed for me to feel completely comfortable and knowledgeable.
