Saint Alphonsus and Mountain States Institute for Graduate Medical Education and Research (MSI) address primary care physician needs in Idaho

Saint Alphonsus and Mountain States Institute for Graduate Medical Education and Research (MSI) will open Idaho's newest Family Medicine Residency Program on Tuesday, July 1. The residency program, accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and in partnership with MSI, represents the first Family Medicine residency program for the health system and only one of nine in the state.

“As our state continues to grow, primary care must keep pace to grow with it,” said David McFadyen, President and CEO of Saint Alphonsus Health System. “The Family Medicine residency is designed to address our current and future community health needs by attracting and retaining primary care physicians in Idaho. Through partnership and a shared commitment to the education and future health of Idaho, we are proud to begin training the state’s next generation of family medicine physicians.”

The first cohort will include six residents, two of which  are Idaho natives. Residents will be trained on full-scope Family Medicine including obstetrics and gynecology, newborn, pediatrics, inpatient medicine, emergency medicine and critical care, along with other focus areas, completing training at Saint Alphonsus Medical Center - Nampa, community and rural health settings, along with at Terry Reilly Health Centers.

“We know where residents train – residents stay. More than half of those who completed residency training from 2014 to 2023 are practicing in the state where they did their residency training, and Idaho ranks third in the nation for retaining physician residents to practice,” said Dr. Lisa Nelson, Medical Director of Graduate Medical Education for Saint Alphonsus Health System. “By offering this program, we open the door to the long-term retention of primary care physicians in our community.”
