Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center Reverified as Level II Trauma Center: What it Means for Patients and Families
October 28, 2026
Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise has been reverified as a Level II Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons, solidifying its role as the region’s leading center for lifesaving trauma care. As a Level II center, the Boise-based campus represents the highest level of trauma care in the region, responsible for treating a wide range of complex traumatic injuries, in addition to advancing education, system leadership, and disaster planning.
For Idaho families, this means:
- Access to the highest level of trauma care in the Treasure Valley and surrounding region.
- 24/7 access to board certified trauma surgeons, nurses with specialized training in trauma care, and multidisciplinary support teams equipped to care for the most seriously injured patients.
- A regional trauma hub capable of caring for the most critically injured in one of the nation’s most geographically isolated metropolitan cities and fastest growing regions.
Demand for trauma services continues to grow alongside the region. Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center treated more than 2,700 trauma patients in 2025, a 19% increase over 2024. To meet that demand, Saint Alphonsus has recruited and retained 10 board-certified, specialized surgeons from across the country over the last two years.
“Idaho and the Greater Treasure Valley have seen record breaking growth, and this summer alone, we saw record 1,158 trauma patients from June to August at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center,” said Dr. Ethan Taub, Medical Director of Trauma at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center. “With more than 80% of Idaho classified as rural, increasing population growth, and unparalleled access to outdoor recreation, the need for advanced trauma close to home has never been greater. This reverification ensures patients and families can continue to count on timely, high-quality trauma care when every minute matters.”
The reverification follows a comprehensive evaluation by the American College of Surgeons, which assesses a trauma center’s ability to provide the highest-quality care across the continuum of injury treatment. The review, conducted every three years, examines clinical outcomes, staffing, performance improvement programs, community outreach, education, and readiness to care for injured patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Successfully completing reverification goes beyond meeting the highest national standards of trauma care. The work is driven by a mission rooted in more than 150 years of history in the Treasure Valley.
“For patients, this level of care means that when the unthinkable happens and life changes in seconds, patients have the highest quality care close to home,” said Travis Leach, President of Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center. “No family plans for traumatic injury, but every family deserves expert compassionate, transformative care delivered when it matters most. This reverification is a testament to our physicians, clinicians, and a longstanding commitment to bring excellence to Idaho communities."
The impact of trauma care extends far beyond the emergency room.
