Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among men in Idaho, yet many patients delay care due to concerns about recovery time and long-term side effects. During Men’s Health Month, Saint Alphonsus is encouraging men to prioritize prostate health and learn about a newer, less invasive treatment option that is changing how some patients approach care.
At Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, demand is growing for Focal One® High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU), a first-in-state, incision-free technology used to treat localized prostate cancer. Since launching in February 2025, the program has become the fastest growing HIFU site in the western United States, completing 100 cases in less than 16 months.
HIFU offers a minimally disruptive alternative designed to preserve quality of life while effectively treating localized prostate cancer. The robotic procedure applies focused ultrasound energy to precisely target and destroy diseased prostate tissue while sparing surrounding healthy structures. The procedure is performed in a single session under general anesthesia and requires no incision, radiation, or surgical blade.
“What resonates most with patients is the ability to treat their cancer without putting their lives on hold,” said Marisa Lunghofer, Executive Director of Surgical Services for Saint Alphonsus Health System. “Many men come in expecting long recoveries or lasting side effects. Learning there’s an option that may allow them to return to their normal routines quickly, with fewer disruptions, is incredibly reassuring.”
For eligible patients, HIFU is associated with a low risk of common side effects, such as urinary incontinence or erectile dysfunction, and typically involves minimal time away from work and family life.
As awareness grows, providers at Saint Alphonsus hope more men will seek evaluation earlier and explore all available options.
