Hybrid MAZE Surgery

MAZE

The Hybrid MAZE (or VATS MAZE) procedure is an advanced surgical treatment for atrial fibrillation (AFib) that creates targeted scar tissue to block abnormal electrical signals and restore a more normal heart rhythm.

At Saint Alphonsus Heart Institute, we offer highly specialized MAZE procedures, including the Hybrid MAZE approach, which combines minimally invasive techniques with surgical precision to improve outcomes for select patients. For individuals who need more than medication or standard minimally invasive options, the MAZE procedure – particularly the hybrid approach – can be highly effective in reducing symptoms and improving quality of life.

Our specially trained cardiologists and surgeons utilize advanced heart rhythm technology to deliver personalized, state-of-the-art care across Idaho and Eastern Oregon, helping patients return to daily life with greater confidence.

Living with AFib can increase the risk of serious complications if left untreated; however, effective treatment options are available. In addition to the MAZE procedure, these may include medications and minimally invasive approaches such as catheter ablation. Our team works closely with each patient to determine the most appropriate treatment plan.

You may be a candidate for further evaluation if you experience:

  • Dizziness
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Weakness
  • Fatigue

2015–2020 Clinical Trial Participation

Saint Alphonsus participated in the DEEP trial which evaluated the “hybrid” approach for patients with hard-to-treat, long standing atrial fibrillation. This combined a minimally invasive procedure on the outside of the heart by the cardiac surgeon, along with standard catheter procedure on the inside by an electrophysiologist. Results, published in October 2025, demonstrated the treatment to be both safe and effective. Read the publication.
