The Impact of Stroke
Each year, hundreds of thousands of Americans suffer a stroke, leaving many with disabilities or unable to return to their normal lives. The impact of stroke on the individual, family and the community can be devastating. Studies show that the sooner a stroke patient seeks medical care, the better the outcome. That is why we have developed the Saint Alphonsus Telestroke Network. This program allows patients in rural settings to be seen by a specialist quicker – saving time and lives in many cases and sometimes allowing the patient and family to avoid the stress of an emergency hospital transfer if it is not needed.
Helping Patients From Afar
By establishing a telemedicine link that allows for real-time audio visual interactions, stroke specialists from Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center can examine patients at remote hospitals miles away to diagnose the patient's ailment and support the initiation of prompt treatment locally.
Tissue Plasminogen Activator, or tPA, is an FDA approved medication proven to reverse the effects of stroke when administered within the first few hours. When it comes to the assessment and treatment of stroke patients, “Time is Brain". The faster a patient receives proper treatment for stroke, the better the chances for recovery.
