Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Anyone who suffers symptomatic Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
(COPD) can benefit from the Saint Alphonsus Pulmonary Rehabilitation program.
COPD includes a number of lung diseases that block the exchange of air in the
lungs. The most common of these diseases are emphysema, chronic bronchitis and
asthma.
The Pulmonary Rehabilitation program helps you achieve the most active and fulfilling
life possible. Your personal rehabilitation goals are developed according to
your needs and expectations. Skilled professionals from various disciplines assist
you with physical conditioning, breathing retraining, bronchial hygiene, stress
management and social needs in order to improve your overall quality of life.
After an assessment by the Pulmonary Rehabilitation team, your specific program
is designed. There are three phases:
Phase I
Based on your physician's referral, care is offered on an inpatient basis
during Phase I. Following your individual evaluation, short and long-term goals
are developed, demonstrations and consultations are presented to help educate
you and your family. Your medications, diet and physical ability are also evaluated,
and an individualized home care program of nutrition, therapy and exercise is
designed for you.
Phase II
During Phase II, you receive an individual monitored exercise program that may
include bike, treadmill, and weight use as well as walking. Three times a week
for six weeks, you will also practice relaxation and stress management, and participate
in breathing exercises. This phase is designed to help improve your heart rate,
oxygen saturation, blood pressure and peak flow.
Phase III
In Phase III, you take personal responsibility for your program, learning ongoing
maintenance and reinforcement of the conditioning skills taught in Phase I and
II. The Rehabilitation Center continues to provide motivation and to periodically
reassess your progress. Phase III is optional.
