Saint Alphonsus Telemedicine Programs use technology to provide healthcare across distances. By sending two-way interactive video, pictures, video clips, sound and/or text from one point to another, medical information can be viewed by a specialist and sent back to the patient or sending physician. Telemedicine provides convenient, face-to-face, high quality, specialty physician care to patients and physicians in their local area.
The Tele-BabyDoc program helps to improve the overall health
assessments of newborn babies born at rural hospitals. This program
enables pediatricians to communicate with neonatologists at Saint Alphonsus
who can remotely conduct examinations and aid in treatment decisions that
may stabilize infants who need special care and may also reduce the need
to transport the baby out of town.
By using a specialized portable camera and audio connection, neonatologists can perform a visual evaluation of the baby, listen to the baby's heart and lungs through a telephonic stethoscope, consult with the baby's physician and ask questions of the baby's parents. Saint Alphonsus continues to explore new technologies to expand this offering.
