Treatment
Treatment methods for breast cancer are based on many features of the specific
cancer such as size, lymph node involvement and hormone receptor status (estrogen
and progesterone), to name a few. Local treatments, such as surgery and radiation
therapy, are used to remove, destroy or control the cancer cells in a specific
area. Systemic treatments, such as chemotherapy and hormonal therapy, are used
to destroy or control cancer cells anywhere.
Different forms of treatment may be given at the same time or one after another. Prior to beginning any of the possible therapies, you will have a complete discussion with your physician regarding risks, benefits and side effects of the recommended treatment options. Your physician will also discuss participation in leading national clinical trials when appropriate.
Your case (with your name removed) is often presented and discuss in our Multidisciplinary Breast Care Panel, which is held weekly and consists of breast surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists and our Breast Care Specialist. This panel formulates the best treatment recommendations, based on your individual needs, and then its presented to you by your physician or nurse practitioner.
