Healthgrades Distinguished Hospital for Clinical ExcellenceHealthgrades Names Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center 2013 Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence™

Distinction puts Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Top Five Percent of Hospitals Nationwide for the Fifth Time

On January 15, Healthgrades once again named Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center a Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence™ for the third year in a row (2011-2013). This prestigious distinction places Saint Alphonsus among the Top 5% of hospitals nationwide for clinical performance, one of 262 out of more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide.

Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center is the only hospital in Idaho to receive this recognition five times since the award originated in 2003.  Saint Alphonsus was named a Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence™ in 2003, 2006, 2011, 2012, and 2013.
From 2009 through 2011, Healthgrades Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence as a group, had an overall 30.9 percent lower risk adjusted mortality rate as compared to other hospitals that did not achieve the Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence Award (across 18 common inpatient conditions and procedures).

In recent years, while there has been considerable improvement in hospital quality, disparities among hospitals persist, and hospital quality can vary significantly even within local service areas.  For example, in the Boise, Idaho region, out of the 7 hospitals evaluated for treatment of Heart Failure, there was a wide variation in hospital performance as measured by risk adjusted mortality rates (from 1.0% on the low end to 11.7% on the high end). Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center is among the hospitals in the region with some of the best possible quality care.
Unlike other hospital quality studies, Healthgrades evaluates hospitals solely on clinical outcomes: risk-adjusted mortality and inhospital complications. Healthgrades’ analysis is based on approximately 40 million Medicare discharges for the years 2009, 2010 and 2011. Healthgrades’ hospital ratings are independently created; no hospital can opt-in or opt-out of being rated, and no hospital pays to be rated. In addition to being named a 2013 Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence, Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center was recognized with numerous Healthgrades achievements in the 2013 Healthgrades Fall Ranking and Specialty Excellence Awards
