Helpful Information for Your Emergency Visit
In addition to being prepared to transport and treat the critically ill and injured, the Saint Alphonsus Emergency Department is staffed by specially trained nurses and physicians who are prepared, day and night, to respond to all conditions, from minor injuries to life-threatening emergencies.
There are some obvious emergencies-when someone is severely burned or has stopped breathing, for example. But not every cut needs stitches, nor does every burn require advanced treatment. However, if you think someone could suffer significant harm or death without prompt care, it's an emergency.
Here are some signs that you need help right away:
Chest pain that lasts two minutes or more
Uncontrolled bleeding
Sudden or severe pain
Coughing up or vomiting blood
Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
Sudden dizziness, weakness or vision change
Severe or persistent vomiting or diarrhea
Changes in mental status, such as confusion
Difficulty to arouse.
Minutes matter in an emergency. The sooner you get medical help for a heart attack, the greater your chances for survival and a full recovery. Therefore, don't wait longer than a few minutes to call 911 if you have symptoms such as pain or pressure in the center of your chest.
If you have questions about insurance coverage for an emergency, ask in advance. Some health plans require notification within 24 hours after going to the emergency room. Or you may need to call your primary care doctor before getting emergency help, if possible.
Saint Alphonsus Emergency staff understand your visit to our Emergency Department is an unexpected crisis for you and your family. Your time and quality of care are both very valuable to us. We will serve you in the timeliest manner possible; however, please understand that certain tests and procedures take longer than others to obtain and evaluate results. Also, sometimes unforeseen circumstances may require a greater length of stay. We will keep you informed as to the estimated time it may take to thoroughly diagnose and treat your medical needs.
