High Risk Pregnancy

Saint Alphonsus delivers comprehensive, high-quality care for pregnant women and their babies. We have all the resources to provide state-of-the-art maternal, fetal and neonatal care throughout the Saint Alphonsus Health System, plus some important extras that make a critical difference in their outcomes.

Maternal Fetal Medicine

Maternal-Fetal Medicine specializes in the care of women with complicated, high-risk pregnancies. Our specialists provide consultation and co-management tailored to the patient's needs throughout pregnancy.

Saint Alphonsus Maternal-Fetal Medicine is an AIUM-accredited practice that provides high-level perinatal ultrasound for women in the midst of a high-risk pregnancy. Our fellowship-trained physicians have years of experience providing the kind of specialized care required to protect the health of moms and their babies during the most critical phases of a complicated pregnancy.

Working together with your primary obstetric provider, our Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists provide consultation and co-management that will assist you in planning for a healthy delivery.

What is a high-risk pregnancy?

A pregnancy may be considered high risk for a number of reasons, including:

  • A pre-existing medical condition
  • Age 35 and older or 18 and younger
  • A genetic disorder in the patient or family
  • Obstetric complications

Some examples are listed below, but this is by no means a complete list.

Outpatient Medical Management

  • Hypertension
  • Diabetes
  • Lupus and other autoimmune diseases
  • Thyroid disease
  • Thrombophilias
  • Preterm labor or prior preterm delivery
  • Fetal anomalies and growth restriction
  • History of fetal demise
  • History of multiple prior C-sections
  • Isoimmunization
  • Placental abnormalities, especially placenta previa and accreta

Perinatal Services

  • First trimester screening
  • Chorionic villus sampling
  • Genetic amniocentesis
  • Screening ultrasound for low-risk patients
  • Targeted ultrasound for high-risk patients
  • Fetal echocardiogram

Should your baby have a problem that is diagnosed prenatally, we will work with our neonatal team and the appropriate pediatric subspecialists to provide your baby the best care possible.

Genetic Counseling

A certified Perinatal Genetic Counselor is available to provide expertise in helping families understand inherited diseases and how genetic screening and testing can optimize care for their pregnancy and child. Our Telemedicine program provides a mechanism to deliver this specialty service across our region for our patients in rural areas.

Perinatal Genetic Counseling services include:

  • Preconception counseling: an evaluation before pregnancy to assess the risks, often for women with medical conditions, previous obstetric complications or genetic problems.
  • Genetic counseling: an assessment of genetic risks that can be related to a genetic disorder, being age 35 or older or having had a child with a birth defect.
  • Prenatal serum screening and review of results.
