Hospital Quality & Excellence Study
Rating Methodologies

For the third year in a row, Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center was ranked #1 in Idaho for Overall Orthopaedic Services according to the Tenth Annual HealthGrades Hospital Quality in America Study issued by HealthGrades, the healthcare ratings company. The study, the largest of its kind, analyzed patient outcomes at virtually all of the nation's 5,000 hospitals over the years 2004, 2005 and 2006. Saint Alphonsus was also the only hospital in Idaho to receive the Joint Surgery Excellence Award™ for the second year in a row.

The study also found that Saint Alphonsus Orthopaedics was:

  • Ranked Among the Top 10% in the Nation for Joint Replacement Surgery – Two Years in a Row (2007, 2008)
  • 5-Star Rated for Joint Replacement Surgery – Two Years in a Row (2007, 2008)
  • 5-Star Rated for Total Knee Replacement – Two Years in a Row (2007, 2008)
  • 5-Star Rated for Total Hip Replacement – Five Years in a Row (2004 – 2008)

“We are once again honored to receive national recognition from HealthGrades for our superior orthopaedic patient outcomes,” said Sandra Bruce, President and CEO of Saint Alphonsus. “These clinical quality awards reflect the experience and expertise of our orthopaedic physicians who perform over 7,000 orthopaedic procedures each year, including nearly 600 trauma patients. We are proud to offer Idahoans orthopaedic care that is among the best in the nation.”

Dr. Richard Moore, an Orthopaedic Surgeon and Department Chair of Saint Alphonsus' Orthopaedics - with 51 physicians on medical staff – attributes the hospital's clinical excellence and national recognition to several aspects.

Dr. Moore said, “We’ve achieved an outstanding reputation for orthopaedic care because of three factors: first, we have highly specialized orthopaedic surgeons who utilize the best surgical techniques and joint replacement technologies, such as minimally invasive incisions, a variety of implant sizes, and consideration of gender and lifestyle activity; second, a unique and targeted recovery and rehabilitation program for patients receiving total hip and knee replacements, called the Joint Care Center program; third, the nurses and staff who support physicians, patients, and families. World-class orthopaedic care involves physicians who specialize and subspecialize in various orthopaedic areas – such as trauma, foot and ankle, hand, hip and knee, sports injuries, and shoulder. We are fortunate to have had that level of expertise at Saint Alphonsus for decades.” READ THE FULL NEWS RELEASE...
